How Do I Change My Air Filter?

Regular maintenance of your home's A/C unit is essential to ensure its efficiency. Also, it keeps good air quality at home and lowers your energy bills.

A regular air filter should be changed every 30 to 90 days depending on the efficiency of your filter and the conditions of your home. According to Energy Star, filters should be changed every 30 days during peak months when your HVAC system is operating at highest capacity. Also, 30 days is also recommended if you suffer from allergies, asthma, have pets or live with a person who smokes

To change your filter, follow these easy steps:

  • Step 1: Buy a New Air Filter - Before buying a replacement filter, find the right size filter for your unit by measuring it or the size might also be printed on the edge of your current air filter. (see How do I Measure My Air Filter)
  • Step 2: Turn Off Your HVAC Unit - For safety, turn off your HVAC unit before changing the filter.
  • Step 3: Remove the Dirty Filter - Most air filters are located to the right or bottom of the unit and should easily be pulled out of the slot. Some filters can also be found in air vents.
  • Step 4: Insert Your New Filter - Follow the arrows on the new filter that indicate the air flow direction and install the filter.
