Why a more expensive filter can cost less per month
Thickness matters more than sticker price. A 1-inch filter is generally replaced every 1 to 3 months. A 4-inch filter holds far more dust and is typically replaced every 6 to 12 months, so the cost spreads across a much longer period.
A real comparison. A 20x20x1 MERV 8 filter in a 12-pack works out to $6.58 per filter. Changed every 2 months, that is about $3.29 a month.
A 20x25x4 MERV 8 filter in a 6-pack works out to $17.66 per filter. Changed every 9 months, that is about $1.96 a month, roughly 40% less, and it is a higher-capacity filter.
If your system accepts a 4-inch filter, it is usually the cheaper choice over a year. Check your existing filter or your air handler slot for the size before you switch.
What actually changes the price
- Size. Standard sizes cost less than uncommon ones. A custom size costs more than a stock size because it is cut to your measurements.
- MERV rating. Higher filtration costs more. MERV 13 captures finer particles like smoke and allergens, while MERV 8 and 11 handle everyday dust and pollen at a lower price.
